How do I download, install and run EX2?
- First, download the EX2 installation file ex2_install.exe zipped file below:
- Then, double-click on the downloaded, expanded, file to run the EX2 installation programme, following the on-screen instructions.
- You can then run EX2 by clicking on ‘Start’ – ‘All Programs’ – ‘The DofE’ – ‘EX2’ – ‘EX2’ or by clicking on the EX2 shortcut icon on your desktop.

Click on the DOWNLOAD button to download the EX2 installation file and select 'Save' to save it to your computer. Once it has finished, open the zip file, run the downloaded installation file ex2_install.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.

Why can’t I download the EX2 installation file ex2_install.exe?
Some computer networks have firewalls in place which block the downloading of EXE files for security purposes. If you can’t download an EXE file on your network, try downloading it in one of the two other formats provided:
Download ex2_install.zip from the above panel
and double click on it to view the ex2_install.exe file it contains (note that if you are running an Operating System earlier than Windows XP, you may need to download and install a simple Zip file programme such as WinZip, available from www.winzip.com
). Then double click on the ex2_install.exe file to run the EX2 installation programme
Download ex2_install_alt.zip from the above panel and extract the file ex2_install.txt from the Zip file to your computer. Right-click on the extracted file, select rename and then change the file’s extension from ex2_install.txt to ex2_install.exe. Then double click on the renamed file to run the EX2 installation programme. You will require your IT Manager’s permission to use this route.

Will EX2 work on an Apple Mac?
No. EX2 will only work on Windows PCs with a minimum specification of:
- Pentium 90
- 32MB RAM
- 8X CD-ROM drive
- Windows 98 SE
You can, of course, run Windows on a Mac using various methods...
What if I want to install it on my school network?
EX2 will not work if the software is going through a networked system (e.g. school IT labs, LEA network) the licence purchased must be downloaded to the hard drive of individual computers/laptops and users must have local log ins. EX2 will not go past the log in page if it is ‘networked’.
When I run EX2, why does it seem that part of the screen is cut off?
EX2 requires your computer’s display resolution to be set to a minimum of 1024 by 768 pixels. To set your computer to this resolution:
Right-click on your desktop and select Properties
On the Settings tab and set the screen resolution to 1024 by 768 pixels, then click on OK.
How do I buy a Licence to use EX2?
EX2 is NOT free software, so all users require a valid licence to use it.
As of July 2014 it is no longer available for sale, although you may still download the system and use a previously purchased validation code to activate.
I have bought a licence for EX2, how do I now activate EX2 on my computer?
- Run EX2 by clicking on ‘Start’ – ‘All Programs’ – ‘The DofE’ – ‘EX2’ – ‘EX2’ or by clicking on the EX2 shortcut icon on your desktop.
- Click on Continue on the title page to go to the Licence Activation page. (Note that if an EX2 licence is already activated on a computer, this screen will be skipped.)
- On the Licence Activation page, enter the email address you supplied when you purchased your licence and the activation code that was sent to that email address, then click on activate to activate your licence on your computer.
- Once activated, each time you use EX2 you will be asked to confirm that you have the correct licence by clicking on the I have the Correct Licence button.
Why can’t I open the EX2 download files?
All of the download files in EX2 are PDF files held in ZIP files.
Windows XP or above users will be able to open ZIP files, but users running an Operating System earlier than Windows XP, may need to download and install a simple Zip file programme such as WinZip (available from www.winzip.com).
To view a PDF file, you need to have the free Adobe Acrobat Reader program installed on your PC. This is available on the DofE EX2 CD-ROM or can be downloaded from www.adobe.com

If you want to completely remove EX2 from a computer:
First, remove your EX2 licence as described above.
Then, click on ‘Start’ – ‘All Programs’ – ‘The DofE’ – ‘EX2’ – ‘Uninstall DofE EX2’.
When I put the EX2 CD-ROM in my CD-ROM drive, nothing happens. How can I start the programme?
If the 'autoplay' function on your CD-ROM drive is disabled, you can manually start the programme by locating your CD-ROM drive in Windows Explorer and double clicking on the file autorun.exe. Alternatively, click on Start, then click on Run..., type in D:\autorun.exe (where D:\ is your CD-ROM drive) and then click on OK.
When I put the EX2 CD-ROM in my CD-ROM drive and the autorun starts, should I run the programme from CD-ROM or should I Install it?
It is recommended that you install EX2 onto your computer as it will run considerably faster than when run from CD-ROM.
How do I view other programmes I have open on my computer at the same time as EX2?
There are two ways to do this:
Hold down the Alt key on your keyboard and click on the Tab button to select the programme you want to view. To return to EX2, do the same and select DofE EX2 from the list.
Alternatively, click on the Start key on your keyboard to see your active programmes on the Windows Taskbar.
When I run EX2, my screen goes black
Sometimes, certain versions of windows confuse the layer order of the EX2 programme and its black background.
To restore the correct order, hold down the Alt key on your keyboard and click on the Tab button to select DofE EX2 from the list.
What do you mean by 'users'?
The number of “users” refers to how many computers the software can be installed on, not the number of participants or Leaders who can benefit from the content. For example, a school which bought a 10 user licence, can install it on 10 computers in the IT lab, and then have 100 participants use it.
